Donald Singer

It’s with deep sorrow that we share that former CSA President Donald Singer passed away on Wednesday evening, January 15, 2025.

Donald led our union from 1989 to 2000, and his impact as a long-time leader of our union is still felt to this day. Under his steady leadership, CSA expanded our executive staff, including the creation of the full-time position of first vice president. Our in-service members increased by over 1000 during his tenure, and Donald and his team presided over meaningful contract negotiations that secured critical due-process protections, increased supervisory base salaries, and helped develop a fair Principal Performance Review, among other achievements. He also backed up his words with action: Donald was the first and only president to be arrested for disorderly conduct as he demonstrated against the Board of Education. In 2000, he passed the torch to become a full-time Executive Vice President of our national union, AFSA, where he continued to impact our members on the federal level until his retirement.

At the 2024 Conference last November, CSA presented Donald Singer with the Peter S. O’Brien Award, our union’s highest honor given to those who have uniquely and significantly contributed to our growth. He and his family were in good spirts, and we’re thankful we were able to celebrate his work and legacy. Donald will be greatly missed, and our thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones as they mourn and honor his incredible life of service.

We look forward to sharing more about his life and career in the next issue of CSA news.
