RMD Required Minimum Distributions
(RMDs) are mandatory annual withdrawals from traditional IRAs, SEP/SIMPLE IRAs, and 401(k)/403(b) plans, generally starting at age 73. Your TDA is a 403B. The IRS requires RMD’s to be calculated by dividing the previous year's closing balance by a life expectancy factor. Penalties for missing RMDs are 25% of the amount not taken.
TRS will be distributing these RMD letters in the next few weeks. Once these letters are available, you can also log into your secure TRS account and make changes online.
Key RMD Rules and Information:
Starting Age: The age to begin RMDs is 73 for those born between 1951 and 1959, and 75 for those born in 1960 or later.
Deadline: Generally, RMDs must be taken by December 31 each year.
First-Year Exception: You can delay your first RMD until April 1 of the year after you turn 73, but you must take two RMDs that year (the first by April 1, the second by Dec 31).
Calculation: Your RMD is calculated by the TRS using IRS Uniform Life Table, usually based on the account balance as of December 31 of the prior year.
IRMAA Medicare Reimbursement forms for 2025 are now available.
What is IRMAA?
The Income-Related Monthly Adjustment Amount (IRMAA) is an additional amount that you are required to pay for your monthly Medicare premiums if you have higher annual earnings. If you paid more than the standard monthly reimbursement rate for Medicare Part B, as an Income Related Monthly Adjustment Amount (IRMAA), you may be eligible for additional reimbursement. If you submit the required documentation for IRMAA reimbursement, your reimbursement will be deposited directly into your bank account.
If your 2025 SSA-1099 form shows that you received the standard Medicare Part B premium deductions of $2,220.00 only, you did NOT pay IRMAA in 2025 and the following information does not apply to you. Please do NOT submit an IRMAA application as you are not eligible for reimbursement.
IRMAA 2025 annual reimbursements will be issued during the 3rd week of October 2026.
Medicare-eligible retirees and their Medicare-eligible dependents can submit an IRMAA application if they paid above the standard amount of $185.00 per month. If you did not pay more than the standard amount, then you are not eligible for IRMAA.
If you are currently receiving your pension check through Electronic Fund Transfer (EFT) or direct deposit, your reimbursement was deposited directly into your bank account. This is separate from your pension payment. If you don’t have EFT or direct deposit, you will receive a check in the mail.
Please submit the IRMAA 2025 Reimbursement Application, along with all required documents, electronically to: https://nycemployeebenefits.leapfile.net
The Welfare Fund is happy to review and submit your IRMAA Reimbursement Form. If you would like the fund to review and submit your paperwork, please email the reimbursement form and all supporting documentation to Susan Barone, Welfare Fund Administrator at sbarone@csawf.org
Files will not be accepted if sent as a jpeg (photo) file. Documents must be scanned as a PDF, or faxed to 212-962-6059.
New Medicare Number
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has reissued 1.3 million Medicare Beneficiary Identifiers (MBIs) in early 2026 primarily as a security measure following a large-scale fraud case. This incident involved malicious actors across all 50 states who were charged with healthcare fraud, and it was discovered that some beneficiary data had been used to fraudulently create unauthorized Medicare.gov accounts.
Effective Date: If you received a new card, the new number became active on April 14, 2026.
Purpose: The new unique numbers are assigned to prevent further fraudulent billing or identity theft under old, compromised identifiers.
Same Benefits: This change does not impact your healthcare coverage or benefits.
Compensation Accrual Fund Balances
Members can check the balances to both their campaign accrual fund as well as their Welfare Fund dental benefits through ASO (Administrative Services Only) at www.asonet.com. For your convenience, click here for detailed instructions on how to access your balances.
